At the risk of setting off
another flurry of comments
about how cupholders do not make the car, I, too, have a problem with our 2007 Infiniti G35 Sport's cupholders. Looking at them, initially you wonder if that's what they're for. They appear squarish -- circle doesn't fit in square hole. But then my tall Jamba Juice cup did sit nicely in the "cupholder"...while I was parked...
However, as soon as the car was in motion, the cup fell over, looking like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, since the depth of the holder is kinda shallow and there wasn't anything to secure the cup in place. True, maybe my tall 24-oz. cup is top-heavy and maybe someone with a 12-oz. cup wouldn't have the same issue. But let's just say, I'm glad my drink had a secure cover because I do love accelerating in that car.

that's strange...almost seems like there should be an attachment that goes over the "cup holders"
edit: so there is a piece that goes over that, but i guess it's too slim to hold the cup

My XR has the same problem. It holds small and regular size cups well, but it is not deep enough to hold taller drinks. Nice to see the domestics matching right up there with the Japanese :)

I don't even use cupholders for drinks. And the funny thing is, I never have any problem "holding" cups in place on my dining room table.
Now, what the heck is a "Jamba Juice".? Do jamba's grow on a tree? Are they a fruit or vegetable?

The cup won't fit with the center divider in place?
The automatic model gets a proper cupholder instead of those squares.
Don't know why Nissan went all wacko on the manual model.
Presumably you should be cornering crazy fast at all times that even thinking about having a drink in your car is preposterous.
The manual transmission G35 discourages carrying loose objects in the vehicle for your safety.
Praise Nissan for thinking so much for our safety!
I'm sure somewhere in the owner's manual, it also tells you to wear a helmet at all times...

One of the underrated benefits to having a crossover/SUV is the generous cupholders. My old Tahoe could fit a Big Gulp up front (actually 2 of them) no problem and my new Honda ain't too shabby either - it even has cupholders in the passenger doors!

billt9-
Nissan & others reserve hand-operated parking brakes for the manual transmission cars. The parking brake handle takes up space on the console & makes the cupholders far smaller.
Of course, some automakers (cough, cough, Honda) manage to fit a hand-operated brake & good-size cupholders in all of their models, automatic and manual. Conversely, very few leave their manual transmission cars with foot-operated brakes (see OG Cadillac CTS).
Given how avant-garde Nissan is with gimmicrackery, I'm fairly surprised/disappointed that they didn't put a push-button park brake in their new generations of vehicles that all have keyless ignitions. Oh, one complaint about those, BTW - they don't sense the key as you walk up. You still have to hit the unlock button on the door handle.

I wonder if this has anything to do with a cultural difference between Japanese and American drivers. We Americans like to eat in the car - even while driving - and a lot of our cars look like they've been lived in. In Japan - at least when I was there about 20 years ago - every car I saw was immaculate. We were told that the people there would never think about eating in their cars. In the Ginza district of Tokyo - very upper-class, hip, urban, affluent area - I don't think I saw one car that was more than a few years old, and every one was washed and clean. Maybe our want of bigger, badder cupholders in cars designed from a Japanese mindset isn't going to cross that cultural barrier.

No thinking for cupholders? That is a major design flaw. I mean you can have power and style but one will be asking, where's the substance. I don't see why Infiniti hasn't put enough work hours into their egronomics. Silly how its an entry-level luxury sport sedan and yet this one thing can just show how dedicated the company is at satisfying its drivers. They should know that people live in their cars. Its not uncommon. And the cupholders fit not really much, not at all versatile with other oddly shape beverages. It makes me wonder if their other flaws lurking about the cabin. Think it through.

Many vehicles have terrible cup holders, such as many cars made by GM and Chrysler.
Today I saw the cupholders of the 2008 Chevy Malibu at the Texas State Fair. I thought I was in 1990.
