2007 Nissan Versa: Dark Side of the Moon

I've had a lot of drive time in the Versa this week. A few days ago I was in a mad rush to get a lot of errands done in a short amount of time. I praised the keyless entry and start for their frustration relieving abilities. Well, I want to backtrack on the praise just a smidge...
Overall I still do like the system a lot, but the way in which you turn off the car is silly to me. It requires you to twist the knob back to the "lock" position. To get it there, you have to press down a release and twist at the same time. It's similar to many "don't forget your keys" systems found in other cars. But this car doesn't need a key, why does it still have this function?

Just push a button and twist the starter back. It's not as easy as it may sound, especially if you're doing it in a rush. If you don't switch it back to the "lock" position, the car will buzz at you in a very annoying pitch. Maybe I don't have a ton of patience for a system that doesn't have a justification or maybe it's because that buzzer annoys me as much as my mom did telling me to clean my room when I was a kid.

Reminds me of the button my old Sentra had that let you take your key out of the ignition. I hated that thing.

That button is a safety feature that prevents you from locking your steering wheel while driving. While it does seem as though the auto companies are out to annoy us, they don't spend money on safety devices unless people die and new regulations are set. Usually these buttons aren’t necessary with an automatic transmission, since you can’t lock the wheel unless the trans is in Park. Rather than have two sets of ignition switches, it would appear Nissan would rather save a buck than make your life easier.

See, this is why they should have just used a start button. :-)
