2007 Ford Edge SEL -- Glaring Mistake

There are certain things that matter to me as a driver. One, that you blog readers may have noticed, is sight lines. If you're piloting a couple tons of steel around at substantial velocities, seeing what's around and behind you is always a good thing. Seems pretty common sense, actually...

Another is actually being able to see out, say, the FRONT of the car, also known as the windshield. In this case, the Ford Edge fails miserably. To wit:

Whether it's the type of glass or the rake of the windshield, this sort of design flaw seems inexcusable. It was particularly hairy when I drove this 5,150-pound behemoth from the glare of day into the sudden darkness of our company parking garage. Temporary blindness in a large crossover. Bad.

Yeah, pretty much every other magazines have complained about that same reflection in the windshield. Ford ought to make some changes to the dash.

Good catch, carfreak. Our SEL model with AWD weighs 4,282 pounds. My bad. Still heavy.

The only cure is a pair of polarised sun glasses. My friend who has the edge actually bought a pair of $30 polarised sunglasses for me on our 1100 mile trip and the edge really need it. Without the polarised glasses the glare is really annoying, depending the direction of the sun however other than that its a nice crossover. But it steers me more in the direction of its sibling cx-9

This is the kind of thing that makes me wonder......you mean in all the cold weather, hot weather, any weather testing miles that are always bragged about - no one noticed this pre-production???

I noticed something similar to this while renting a Pontiac G6. The actual glass covers to ALL of the gauges were completely glared out in the sun light - it was hilarious (except not really).

Just do what I do in my Wrangler, fold down the windshield.

Since I already commented, I have a random question for you Doug.
Is there an age limit to comment these blog entries?

rick8365 - good point on the pre-production. I wish I was a fly on the wall at some of these auto manufacturers. I often wonder about some of the same design flaws on the new camry and it's misaligned panels. It is a clear mold/engineering issue.. when in the preproduction or production process does someone not push the stop button to fix the issue vs. letting it get to the consumer and having it be the topic that shadows the good things about the vehicle. They all seem like such easy fixes, but than again I'm not in the trade.

It is a good comment that Rick brought up, it seems all car mfgs claim to run amazing torture tests in all sorts of climatic conditions etc etc. And then cars/trucks over heat going up an incline with the AC on. Or have poor design cues.
Makes you think that after all the work the engineers have done, the bean counters then step in and have the final say.

I agree with all of you. One wonders if it's flawed testing procedures or testing that happens and then things get changed later, or it's the bean counters. My guess is a little of each.
And carfreak: No, there is no age limit here. If you are articulate and say something cool, that's fine with us. Please try to stay to the subject matter. Don't use any foul language or racial slurs or you will be stricken from the site and generally viewed as a moron.

Ok.
Thanks Doug, because I am only 12 years old, and I know you might think I am lying, but my mom wanted to just be sure there was no age limit on comments.

I had an Edge SE as a rental a few weeks ago for a 1200 mile business trip and the glare drove me nuts! Any time the sun is up there is a panaramic view of the top of the dash in the windshield.

My co-worker, who has a new F150 and a Five Hundred for his wife, was interested in driving it. After about a mile, he declared that he could never buy an Edge because of how distracting the glare is.

There is a simple solution to the glare in the windshield: Install a dark color dashmat. I purchased one from this place: http://www.global-accessories.com for another Ford car. It solves the problem very well.

Seems like this is an issue on the light color dashes... our Charcoal dash only has an issue with the bright trim on parts of the dash.

During the day, I only drive with my sunglasses (in any vehicle) and I don't see the reflections then.

BTW... it a reflection issue, not a glare issue.
