1984 Ferrari 308: Putting Us In The Poor House

Since we bought the Ferrari six weeks ago, we've driven it nearly 2000 miles. But as we feared, maintenance costs are killing us. So far we've spent $15.95 on two quarts of Mobil 1, $11.95 for a fancy keyfob and $23.98 on new wiper blades.

If this keeps up we'll be driving our 308 to the soup kitchen...

$15.95 for two quarts of Mobil 1? Where were they purchased so we can avoid buying oil there?

Walmart sells 5-gallon jugs of M1 and some Costcos sell 6-qt cases of M1 for a *lot* less per quart.

Also, should we be putting a full synthetic (yes, I know some will say newer M1 formulations are not a full synthetic like the older formulations) oil into an "older" vehicle? Some people say putting a full synthetic oil is fine (Mobil 1 web site "Myths" page bottom: http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Synthetics/Myths.aspx ). Others say doing so is a no-no.

I'm willing to take this money pit off your hands now. I'll give you 14k as is. Interested?

Give me a break. I had a Mercedes-Benz 300SD that cost me $1800 in parts and tools in 20k miles--and I did all the work myself. That's without gimmicks like the key chain.

Not to spoil the fun, but what kind of real service does this beast require? When might that happen?

geez, could you guys seriously not tell that Scott was joking?

Was he? I might have to ask him.

We know he was joking. At least I hope all of us reading this knew he was joking. Still, nobody should have to pay that much for two quarts of Mobil 1.

If this thing uses that much oil - or at least has the potential to use that much oil, I would say pop for the 5 quart jug at Wal-mart for a mere $23.95. Divide that by 5 and that's less than a dollar a quart. You could have saved 13.95 and gotten a burger and fries and maybe even a fake mustache.

you may want to check your math bigal.
5 quarts for $23.95
1 quart = $23.95/5 = $4.79.

Not sure how you got "less than a dollar a quart"....

I had just woken up from a nap??? Anyway, 4.79 is still a pretty good deal :D

Still, getting the fake moustache alone would have made it worth the trip.

OT - I caught a few minutes of a 'Magnum P.I.' episode last night - I wouldn't have stopped to watch it had it not been for this blog and wanting to see the Ferrari. lol

About that key fob. It came apart last night. I hope that isn't an omen.

SubyTrojan says:

So you finally got some seat time in the 308, Dan?

desmolicious says:

that would happen from dropping the key fob on one too many bar counters to impress da ladies...
