Camry Fuel Economy: Depends on the Driver

It had been a long time since we checked the lifetime average fuel economy for our 2007 Toyota Camry. I hauled out the battered notebook in the door panel and spent a half hour crunching the numbers. The final result was a tepid 25.09 average over the 16,167 miles we've driven it.

There was, however, an interesting pattern in the numbers...

The Camry was driven from Los Angeles to Detroit and back by two different drivers. I don't know anything about the route that was taken, temperature and head or tail winds. However, one driver got about five tanks that averaged mid to low 20s. The other driver logged five tanks that were all above 30 mpg with a high of 33 mpg. My suspicion was that one driver drove at 80 to 85 mph while the other driver drove the speed limit + mph.
