2005 Ford GT: Fuel System Fine -- Except the Gauge...

A weekend drive in the Ford GT failed to initiate the engine stalling problem. I filled it up with new gas from the Mobile I normally use and everything seemed fine...except for the gauge. After filling up I drove away and then noticed the gauge was just below 3/4. At first I thought the automatic shuf-off had occurred too early, but then I remembered that 12.5 gallons went in and the car was just below 1/4 when I filled up...

There was no way it should be reading below 3/4. But as I drove the gauge slowly rose to just over 3/4. I finally shut the car off, waiting 30 seconds, and restarted it. The two photos above were taken just before turning the car off and just after re-starting it. Obviously the gauge was simply having a temporary hiccup.

Don't older model cars have gas gauges like that?
Seems like an older design.
Unless this just occurs once and never comes back.

I remember driving cars in the 1990s with that kind of gauges.

at leat it works... the fuel gauge in my van is so quirky that most of the time it shows 1/8th of a tank. The only way I know how much gas I have is right after I start the vehicle and before I start moving. After that the guage jumps all the way back down to the "E".

My wife's '01 Eclipse has gas gauge issues too, although it tends to read higher than it should -- at least until you've driven it a while. It might say you have a quarter tank, but after five minutes of driving, the low fuel light comes on and you're on E.

thebigal: Is that "The Big Al" or "The Bi Gal"?

I had the exact same thing happen to me on my 2005 GT. Happend only one time about 5k miles ago. I have never seen it again.

greenpony, if you click on the link above thebigal's comment, you will be taken to his CarSpace page. There, you will see proof indeed that thebigal is "The Big Al." While you're at it, you might as well set up your very own CarSpace page. :o)

The GT thought you filled it with E85, so it was showing you the equivalent gasoline reading.

My mothers former 2000 Expedition Eddie Bauer 4x4 (she also had a 97 Expedition 4x4 with numerous issues) had a simular problem. She could add gas to the tank and have to drive at least 20-30 minutes or so before the gauge and the "miles left to empty" computer indicated that there was more gas in the tank. It also threw lean codes occasionally and for some reason would "hiccup" as she called it when aggressive throttle was applied from a stop. Only one big huccup no sputtering. Of course the local Ford dealer couldnt figure it out. Plus on 2 occasions it blew spark plugs out of the motor.... litterally.

If you have a 97-02 Ford truck or SUV with the 5.4 Triton and hear a slight ticking type noise you dont need oil its your spark plug(s) that for some reason, back out because of the threading in the heads.

If you take your truck to Ford to replace the "MISSING" plugs they will tell you that your head or heads need to be replaced. In some instances this is true, but my uncle (my mothers brother and former Ford/Lincoln/Mercury mechanic for 28 years) rethreaded the heads and it ran fine other than the aformentioned fuel issue. She now owns a 2002 Lexus LX470, that thing is BUILT like a tank.
