2007 Toyota Camry: Farewell, My (not entirely) Lovely

Well, it's finally happened. The boys in the home office have sent out a man to take away my long-term Camry. This, presumably so that the ol' gray girl can live out the rest of her long-term life in the benign climate of Southern California. I've been flipping through pictures of our time together and I've got to say, I think we'll both be better off without each other...

Oh, but the memories. So let's all hop aboard the way-back machine and have look at how we arrived at this not entirely tearful parting.

There was the time that Camry and I drove in the blizzard in Michigan. And then drove in the blizzard in Indiana. Oh, and the time we drove in the blizzard-like ice storm in Missouri. Hey at least we never had a collision, eh, ol' girl?

Then there was that one time when there wasn't a blizzard and the Camry and I did have a collision. Good times, good times!

Oh, I could go on and on. Like the time I wrote that the Camry had a Karl Malden nose and that Camry was an anagram for Marcy. Good stuff--all of it!

But the truth is, I treated the Camry like the servant that it was designed to be and it did everything I asked of it. It's not hard to see why this vehicle has, for many years, been one of the best-selling cars in the land. Often, it has been the best selling. It's easy. It's inoffensive. It's soft and smooth and is a first-rate Turnpike cruiser. Its headlights are still too dim. The seats are too unsupportive. And we can't shake the feeling that this generation is not as carefully built as earlier ones. But it is reasonably priced, reliable, roomy and innocuous. It is a Camry. I won't miss it, because that would require emotion and the Camry doesn't inspire any emotion whatsoever. But I do respect it.

I still think you guys should have gotten the SE trim level so you'd have those sassy spoilers.

So is the SRX taking up residence in D-town now? Nice that they give you the AWD SUV *after* the lovely snow and ice storm season has ended.

I still think they should have more of the vehicles in the upper Midwest and fewer in perpetually snow-free SoCal... Being from Chicago, a car's winter driving characteristics are important to me.

So is that what's next for Edmunds in Detroit? The SRX?

Dan was in LA when he was driving the SRX. We sent him back to Detroit carless. -- Donna

I think it's actually an anagram for "my car"...which is really dorky--I like "Marcy" much better.
