Jeep Compass Limited: Hard-Knock Life

The Jeep Compass has one of the more attractive-looking interiors in its class. The aesthetic is simple and clean, and I dig the geometry of all its sharp angles. I especially like the sleek look of its shifter.

But the cabin's good looks won't dull the pain when you bang your elbow on the Jeep's hard-as-a-rock center armrest...

Save for the roof and the seats, the Compass' cabin is 100 percent hard plastic. I realize this SUV has a low price tag, but other vehicles in this price range (like the Nissan Versa) manage to give you a little padding where it counts. A severe look can be cool when it comes to interiors. A severe feel, not so much.

Another thing that struck me was the strange location of its interior door handles.

They're way, way up near the windshield, and require an uncomfortable twist of the wrist should you choose to cut loose from the Compass' hard plastic belly.

The interior looks basic without any personality. I bet most of the parts are from other models (stereo, climate control knobs)

The Compass / Caliber interiors are among the worst in their class. Nothing in them seems like any kind of quality at all. I believe Karl touched on this awhile back.

"The Jeep Compass has one of the more attractive-looking interiors in its class." - Thanks for the laugh I needed that today.

I think the interior is nice. I understand the cost and durability of the hard plastic. I don't really mind it. I guess I'm more understanding when it comes to reducing costs and it's not as if I sleep on the dashboard. However the hard plastic scratches very! very! easily. And this concerns me, because I'm having problems geting them to disappear. Any tips?
