Kia Sedona: Minivan vs. SUV

It's slightly embarrassing to admit, but I like minivans. Soccer mom stigma or not, their utility combined with their car-like driving characteristics are a draw not found in any other kind of vehicle. When Keymaster Kelly hands me the car list at the end of the day and my choice is between a Chevy Tahoe or Kia Sedona I'll choose the stigma of the minivan over the hassle of the large SUV every time.

On that note, here's another reason to like the Sedona. Its center console (below) is huge and versatile. Since I use the Sedona to haul mountain bikes and fellow cyclists all over Southern California every weekend, having a place to keep requisite recovery drinks, food and magic potions is important. As you can see, there's no shortage of potion space in the Sedona. And the tray folds out of the way if you want to use the space. Nice.

I test drove the Sedona last month and that tray really is handy, but I did have a gripe with it's function. The bar lever located below the tray was hard for me to operate. Maybe it was just the test vehicle (since it was used with ~9K miles), but it took a lot of force to move the darn thing. Did you guys have similar issues?

I'd take a MINI(MINI) van like the Mazda5 or Kia Rondo...

Josh, see if you all can acquire a Renault Espace F1. :o)

What other minivan has a 3.5 liter V-10 putting out around 800 hp (0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 194 mph) and a Williams F1-inspired chassis? I loved using it in Gran Turismo 2 for the original PlayStation against my friends who had no idea of its existence!

I can picture you hustling this around Big Willow!

i'm into minivans as well. well, "people movers" or MPV's. my wife is always weirded out when i say i like the mazda5 or the odyssey but i have to agree with josh on the utility aspect and it's also a comfort to drive. my personal favorites are the current Honda Elysion (this thing looks great! van? good-looking? huh?), the Toyota Estima Hybrid (remember the Previa? this is the new one), the Mazda5 and the Honda Stream (i wish Honda would bring this stateside).

I had no idea that Renault existed. Here's another hot-rod minivan link:

As for what Josh says, I must agree, and I think SUVs are the most pointless vehicles out there (except Jeeps, since they actually fulfill the purpose of off-roading). Minivans are much more useful, and you can fit a sofa in one, which is something no SUV out there can do.

Hah, I guess I'm not the only closet mazda5 admirer! I don't know how they drive but I think they look really nice. If I didn't need my current vehicles to bolster my ego I may have got one!

I must admit to liking the Mazda5 as well. A minivan is too big for me, but one of these mini-minivans autoboy16 referred to seem neat to me. Wouldn't mind tooling around in that Renault either though : )

I'd take an R63 AMG if I ever needed a minivan. That would fulfill my ego needs! Yeah yeah, I know it's not *really* a minivan, but it sure looks like one...
