RAV4 Playing 'Possum

I've got a problem. Not so much a problem as a project. It seems a lemon tree in my front yard is a prime attraction to the indigenous opossum population. What's more is that our municipal animal control office patently refuses to accept these caged critters. I don't know why, but as a result, I've been forced to relocate said animal(s) to a less poopulated populated location.

Luckily, the RAV4 handily accepts the cage with its 37 x 42-inch cargo floor even with the second row seats in place. Thus far, the opossum taxi has shuttled three non-paying customers to the nearby wetlands where they'll be less likely to raise the attention of humans.

Why do they need relocation? Aren't they harmless? Also, the city (L.A.) will come pick up a dead possum, though I am not suggesting you kill them. My dogs did not like interloping possums and I had to call 311 a couple times to come get the carcasses out of the backyard.

They're not harmless - they will tear up a car or some dogs in a fight.

They're not harmless. They're like big rats. They carry diseases and can give pets all kinds of problems, one of them being rabies. I'm surprised Chris was willing to risk putting them in cages and carrying those cages. If you ask me (which no one is, of course) the best possum is a dead possum.

to me the most surprising result is that the animal control office does ont accept possums. Chris you should take the possum to the animal control office and if they refuse to take it you should let it free. In their office.

LIke anybody will come back and read this, but it is worth noting that because of their low metabolisms, opossums almost never carry rabies. It is also unlikely that an opossum would pick a fight with anything bigger than a rat, although it may respond ferociously if attacked (see "Virginia Opposum" entry in Wikipedia...). Most likely they will play dead if seriously threatened. Relocating them is a fine strategy, since they are extremely easy to catch (just need a cage and about anything for bait) and they tend to be somewhat itinerant anyway. We just try to ignore ours, although we don't have pets outside.
