Mercedes Benz R500: If the subwoofer fits, order it

Here's a look at the R500's cargo space with just one of the third row seats folded down. I like how it's open and uncluttered. Spacious? Not exactly, but it's adequate...

And here's how Mercedes keeps the clutter to a minimum. The spare tire, jack assembly, first aid kit, and Harmon Kardon subwoofer (part of a Premium Package) are all neatly stored under the rear cargo area. It helps make the most of what space there is - plus, I have yet to hear a single rattle.

It's not exactly obvious at first but maybe you do get what you pay for with the $60,000+ R500.

Surprising what passes for a subwoofer these days... It does spark my curiousity as to when Mercedes began using Harmon International (JBL, H. Kardon, Infinity, Mark Levinson) as their audio supplier. Mercedes was in bed with Bose long before just about anyone else except for GM and Nissan, and every Mercedes I ever owned or drove had a Bose system in it, except for my 1987 560SEC which was just a Becker Grand Prix tape deck.

Mercedes has used Harmon for a few years - BMW uses them too. Used to be Bose was one of the few name brand premium systems around - now there's plenty.
