Mazda MX-5: Reflections on losing weight

2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport - Erin Riches

Over the weekend I drove the R500, which weighs nearly 5,000 pounds. Last night I hopped into our Mazda MX-5, which weighs half that.

Over the weekend I thought like a consumer. I reveled in the simulated surround sound from the optional Harman-Kardon stereo and couldn't imagine living without the optional front and rear Parktronic sensors...

Yet, I was disappointed that our luxo-wagon didn't have auto-swiveling xenon headlights, power lumbar or a rear backup camera.

But last night in the long-term Miata, I dropped the covetous consumer role and became nothing more than a driver. I don't care that our car doesn't have the Bose stereo, leather seats or a power hard top. And if I bought a Miata of my own, I'd never pay for this stuff. I like what this roadster does to me -- life gets a whole lot simpler when I drive it.
