So after failing miserably at my New Year's resolution, I decided to make today count as my first day of the new year and go to the gym. But when I tried to use the MX-5's key fob to unlock the trunk to throw in my hardly used gym bag, nothing happened. No unlatch noise, no trunk lid movement, nothing...except the red light on the key fob blinking every time I pressed the "unlock trunk" button. The unlock/lock buttons work, however...

If someone locks the trunk using the key, it disables both the interior trunk release and the fob's trunk opener. Try unlocking it with the key... if it beeps a few times then that was it. There's also a switch by the latch inside the trunk that locks out the fob's opener.

Neat! The editor who has the MX-5 tonight will try that out. Thanks.

Where did you find that info hmm? (In my best Dana Carvey Church Lady voice) :
"Could it have been.... the owner's manual?" !
;)

A Miata forum. But I read it there before I read it in my owner's manual... didn't see it in there.

lol, I think the Miata Simply KNOWS you don't want to go to the gym and is trying to help you find a reason not to . What a Car!!

I have a question. How do you lock the trunk with the key? The only thing the key does is open the trunk.
Since I have an '06 Grand Touring model with the Premium Package, I have the SmartKey (proximity system) so I don't have a regular key fob as pictured. However, my other half recently purchased a leftover '06 Touring model, and was complaining that the trunk was hard to open with the key fob.
We looked up the procedure in the manual. Using the key fob, the trunk button must be held down for 1 second before the trunk will open. This ensures that an accidental press of the button will not open the trunk (which may happen when putting the key in your pocket while walking away from the car); it must be deliberate.
Also, as stated previously, the remote trunk lid release lock out switch should be checked, which is located in the trunk on the rear bulkhead about halfway down below the latch (you practically have to stick your head into the trunk to see it). If it is in the off position, the trunk cannot be opened with either the key fob or the dash-mounted release button. For the standard keys, the only way to open the trunk when the switch is in the off position is by using the key itself. For SmartKey owners, using the request button just under the lip of the trunk lid (between the licence plate lights) will still open the trunk, if the SmartKey is in proximity.
