2007 Honda Fit Sport: Pound for pound, the most practical car in our fleet

2007 Honda Fit Sport - Erin Riches

Laundry and a major cleanup project in my apartment took up much of the holiday weekend. Mundane stuff, sure, but my days weren't at all unpleasant and our Honda Fit had a lot to do with that. With few exceptions, this is the perfect city car for me. Not only does it fit anywhere I care to park it, it has rear seats that can fold down or up -- and this makes all the difference...

I love the fact that the seats fold up (like in a pickup) and I left them in that position all weekend. This setup provided a more secure hold for transporting bags of laundry (which tend to topple over when seats are folded down). It was also useful for hauling sorted bags of plastics and paper to the recycling plant.

The fact the Fit is fun to drive only adds to its appeal, because I continued to take corners with gusto while running my errands -- can't do that in a Yaris or Versa. Plus, this is probably the only Honda that's legitimately cute and it gets the occasional compliment on the basis of cuteness alone, which would save me the trouble of buying a dog.

My first car was a 1990 Civic cx. Much of what you said about the Fit is why I enjoyed my Civic cx so much. I still see one every now and then and wonder how such a tiny car held so much. The Fit seems to be an evolution of that.

True enough: I'm trying to get my stepdad to replace his '92 Civic VX hatch with a Fit. He uses the Civic like a pickup.

I think the Fit is like the new generation of the old Civic Si. They're both small hatchbacks. I like them both. (:

Seems like a good car, just wish I hadn't seen the similarly priced, loaded 2003 Lincoln LS on the same day that I saw my first Fit. The LS just made me feel the Fit was a bit over priced.

I'd be interested to see how the Versa and Fit compare on a daily basis. When does the Versa intro go up??

Speaking of overpriced, my sister was shopping for a car when the Fit had just come out, and the local dealer was tacking on a $3,000 markup over MSRP! Other dealers were out, and people were paying the markup. My sister couldn't wait at the time so she ended up with an xA.

Given the utility, I have to admit I can see the argument for getting a Fit over a Civic, even at the same price for equivalent trim levels. Most of us do carry things around more often than passengers, so the Civic's only advantages might be power and crash test scores. That doesn't mean I'll quit whining that Honda should bring back the Civic hatch...

Enjoying the irony of having to burn a few gallons of fossil fuel in order to recycle a few bags of trash.
