2007 Ford Edge: A Second Look

2007 Ford Edge SEL - Eric de los Prados

This is our very first blog entry on our 2007 Ford Edge SEL. You can get full details on which options it has in the long-term intro, but the total sticker is $30,110.

I wrote the first drive on the Edge, but last night was my first chance to drive one on the roads of my choosing. I'd like to say I stand behind all my initial positive impressions about its driving dynamics, but I'm just not as enthusiastic about it the second time around...

The ride quality is comfortable, and the handling is good for a 4,200-pounder, but neither is anything to write home about. Around cloverleaf entrance ramps, our front-driver feels top-heavy and predisposed to understeer. Of course, this is still true of most family-oriented crossover SUVs. The greater annoyance to me last night was the Edge's sluggish throttle response at tip-in. This makes it difficult to coax into a parking spot. Finesse the accelerator pedal and the wheels don't budge. Give it a hasty stab and you get more movement than you want.

Don't take this as a complete dismissal of the Ford Edge. I still think it's a comfortable SUV with a good driving position and plenty of power. Problem is, there are a lot of vehicles that fit that description right now.
