Jeep Compass Limited: Headlights Hearsay

Random Acts of Kindness are not dead! Even in what sometimes feels like a heartless world people still do stop to help each other out as evidenced yesterday in an episode I encountered on the streets of LA. Our Jeep Compass Limited's headlights turn on anytime the keyless entry is operated. Like many newer cars, the headlights stay on for a few minutes after locking the car and also go on when unlocking the vehicle. Last week, in broad daylight, I unlocked the car and began fastening my son into his car seat. Noticing the illuminated headlights, a concerned driver passed me and then took the time to back his car up over half the block to alert me to the battery drain this headlight activity could cause. Without stopping to explain that my Compass tends to run its headlights at any opportunity, I politely thanked him and continued fastening my son's seatbelt. It put a smile on my face, but also put me in a permanent state of concern. Almost every time I lock my car now, I look back at the headlights and wonder, "did I leave my lights on or is this just part of the routine?"

I echo your concern - as my vehicles do this as well. But since they also have automatic headlights I rarely ever touch the light switch to turn them on. But I think it would be good if cars had a battery saver feature that would kill the lights that are inadvertently left on... (some cars like my truck have this so I know it's not a new feature....

I hate that feature and always go looking for the kill switch for it. If I lived in a remote area where there were no exterior lights, then maybe I would appreciate it, but more often than not, it's simply annoying.

Since you have a Limited you should have the EVIC (electronic vehicle information center). It is the button on the left side in the gauge cluster. You can change the settings so the headlights will not come on when you use the key fob to lock or unlock the doors. BTW when you do live in rural areas like I do these kinds of features are the best because the nearest streetlight is the one on the barn that burned out sometime during the Johnson administration. I however like to disable the horn when I lock the doors. Jeeps should be seen not heard.
