California Winter Driving in the MX-5: Tools of the Trade

2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata driver seat - Erin Riches

Some of my non-California family and friends scoff at the idea that it ever gets cold in LA. But the truth is after you've lived here several years, 50 degrees starts to feel quite cold. The weather has not been convertible-friendly this week, but today, with the Mazda MX-5 key in hand, I was determined to take in the bright sunshine in spite of the 30-mph northerly wind gusts. So I put on my convertible winter driving uniform (above)...

Not only is it sufficiently warm with the heat cranked, it's in keeping with the MX-5's not-so-serious personality. It's a little dorky, a little cute, and above all very Miata. This is a car you must fight to drive top-down, or else risk crushing its life force... Well, maybe not, but any day you don't drop the top on a Miata is a day you may regret buying one.

So, all you MX-5 drivers: Tell us about your winter driving uniform.
