2007 Cadillac SRX: Cadillac could take a lesson from Chevrolet

In a recent road test of the Chevrolet Silverado , I made a special mention of how comfortable the seats were after a long haul to Vegas. In fact, I said they were as comfortable, if not more comfortable, that the seats in many luxury cars. Add the SRX to that list.

I spent a serious amount of seat time in our long term Cadillac over the weekend, and I was squirming after two hours. Not serious pain, just uncomfortable enough to make me realize how good the seats in the Silverado are for a truck. And yes, I tried the seat heaters, made a few adjustments and took a few breaks, but every time I got back in the SRX I was uncomfortable within in an hour. Note to Cadillac, leather does not equal comfortable.

Leather does seem to make a seat "harder" and less breathable (was true of the Saturn ION I owned). GM's leather, wherever it comes from, seems particularly stiff when compared to some foreign cars.

Which foreign cars have the most "comfortable" leather seats? Does any one model stand out in particular?

Softest leather - Lexus. But most comfortable leather seats - Saab, Volvo, BMW X5. Worst leather seats EVAH? My brother's Benz G55.

I thought the X5 was terrible, way too stiff, and the extending thigh support left a big gap that felt awful.

OTOH, I'd say the seats in my GMC are a bit too squishy. Comfy over the long haul, but I wouldn't mind them being a little firmer.

kurtamaxxguy, the leather on every past vehicle our family has owned has been pretty soft. And all were GM. Now we have a new EL and when I am sitting in any saet that does not have the perforated leather, I get uncomfortable in no time. I'm still trying to figure out what Ford was thinking with the 3rd row head rests. Anyone over 5 feet tall are uncomfortable with them up or down.

The best seats as far as distance is concerned.....are in my uncles 1998 Mercedes CL500. We recently drove this car from Ky to Atlanta Georgia (haloween weekend) and Ive never been more comfortable. The heated seats worked quickly and they can get very warm.

(Off topic) This car has some serious balls on the highway as a couple of 2000/2001(?) Mustang GT's challenged the big Benz with no success. I had no idea those big cars could move like that! After driving this thing for 4 days I can see why it cost $95,000 because its so solid. Even though its nearly 10 years of age this car still ooozes quality. I still wouldnt buy one though.

The front bucket seats on my 02 Suburban are extremely comfortable. When I sit in them for a long time I dont even want to get up.

I liked the perforated UltraLux (simulated suede) inserts in the 04 Malibu seats better than leather of any kind I've ever sat in. It's relatively soft, doesn't stick to your legs when you're in shorts and the temperature is high in summer, isn't super cold in the winter, and as a bonus cleaned up easily. The leather in my Avalanche is durable, but not so comfortable. If GM had gone with the suedelike inserts in these vehicles I think they'd be about perfect. If / when the leather wears out I'm still driving this vehicle I'm probably going shopping for some Katzkins with the perforated suede because of that. (BTW, my seats are pretty much identical to those in the new Silverado)

One of the reasons I lost interest in the SRX when it first came out was the uncomfortable seats. In the re-do for 2007, Cadillac made a lot of noise about redoing the dashboard and other trim items, but nothing was said about the seats, so I assume they haven't been changed. Too bad. In my mind there is no aspect of a car that is more important than seat comfort, but most manufacturers don't agree with me, it seems.

Euro leather seats, in my opinion, are the most comfortable. Squishy soft leather does NOT equal comfort. The American and Japanese manufacturers seem to think a barca lounger is the way to go when driving, but after a short while the fatigue really sets in.

I can honestly say Ive never been in pain after sitting in any of the BMWs Ive driven (and Ive owned or drivien 3's, 5's, 7's and X5's). Those cars are DESIGNED for driving, and to that end, even the seats are a tool for that purpose.

I hate those seat-mounted seat belts. They cut into my collarbone in my Dad's Buick. I'd be tempted to buy a SRX if it got rid of those belts.
It's also stupid that Cadillac doesn't offer cloth seats on any model except Middle Eastern (not US) CTS's.
