Daily updates on our fleet of cars and trucks

They all Fit

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to let one of my large friends drive our long-term Honda Fit around a parking lot. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but this particular friend is 6'6" tall and the Fit is a subcompact. It was an opportunity for humor, or so I thought.

Not so...

Not only did Gigantor squeeze into the Fit, he was perfectly comfortable. This photo of 6'1" vehicle testing assistant Mike Schmidt  proves the Fit's roominess. The cell phone is there for scale and shows that there's at least 3 inches of remaining headroom.

Cool.

Oh, I didn't know you added the Fit to your fleet. I like the Fit. I looked inside one at the Honda dealership and I was impressed. It has a generous amount of room for an economy car and behind the back seats has a nice, deep floor. Honda knows how to please their customers.

also was totally unaware this car was in the fleet, doesn't even show up on the side.

Neat car, not enough power for me, but amazing value for money, and great functionality.

Er, not to quibble, as it's nice to see a small car have so much space for all those out there that settle for super-large vehicles because of otherwise cramped alternatives..

But didn't you say that your big friend was 6'6", and the guy in the photo is 6'1" (with ~3" to spare over his head)? That adds up to space for a 6'4" person with a shaved head to me..

Unless of course your bigger friend did the standard tilt the driver's seatback into the rear seat so that I'm leaning waaaaay back.. :D

Jerrywimer,

if you think it through, you may realize that a person usually *sits* in a car :)

Er, I don't understand your point. The photo was of a 6'1" person *sitting* in the car with roughly 3" clearance, right? I guess a lot depends on where the other 5" of height is on the driver's body, but that still leaves a 6'6" person sounding a bit cramped. Heck, let's assume 2.5" above the hips, 2.5" below to get the 5" height increase. That still leaves this hypothetical 6'6" person brushing the headliner if they forget to put enough jell on their hair..

In a Fit of enthusiasm, Josh jumped the gun when posting about our new vehicle. We purchased the Honda on October 18, but we don't usually begin posting about new additions until the introduction goes live, and sometimes that takes a couple of weeks by the time we have a car performance tested and photographed.

The Fit intro will go live tomorrow. Expect to see a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 2007 Hyundai Azera in the near future as well.

zach101 says:

... and aren't you guys adding the 2007 Silverado? When will that go live?

zach101 says:

Oh, my bad. The Silverado has gone live. I didn't see the headline when the new post went up... oops.

Hey Jerry, most of that extra height difference could easily be inseam. I am 5'11" and my husband is about an inch shorter than I am. He has a 30 inch inseam and I have a 34 inch inseam. So it's not entirely unthinkable that the 6'6" fella would fit without brushing his head. Does the Fit have a height adjustment for the driver's seat? If so it's even more likely that the big guy fits.

I have to say I am impressed with how much better manufacturers are getting with making smaller cars fit us tallish people. My hubby was looking at a Corolla back in '03 but I vetoed it because it was so uncomfortable for me. We ended up getting an Accord. But looking at the Fit and the Nissan Versa it would seem that in the future we're likely to find something I can actually fit into that isn't a full sedan.

I agree about being impressed with how much better the latest small cars being designed to accommodate taller / larger people. And a seat height adjuster could make a difference. That by the way is another new feature rapidly becoming standard across the board, even on low end vehicles with manual seats. The rental Cobalt our local Chevy dealer gave us while my wife's van was in for work had them too. But I'd assume that the photo above was taken with the seat at it's lowest position if they were trying to illustrate the full headroom available.

Anyway, no biggie. I'm only 5'8" myself. ALL of these small cars normally fit me fine. I was just curious about the statement concerning the 6'6" person fitting versus the photo of a 6'1" person with roughly 3" leftover headroom.

No height adjuster on North American Fits

I kinda wish Honda would produce more trim levels of this car, maybe throw in some fun options that are generally unavailable elsewhere in the class - moonroof, NAV, stability come to mind... and I don't think there'd be any protesting over an Si version, either

This easily seems to be the best vehicle in the class, and one I will certainly consider when it comes time to trade.

I think an si version would absolutely eat the civic si's proffits as i believe this vehicle is lighter howerver a more powerful version with perhaps the civic's 140hp powerplant would be dandy, and i agree to the moonroof etc. Its a neat car and worthy of more than just the econimy status. It could essentially be the utility version or hatch version of the civic if it wanted to.

I had a similar experience shopping for my Fit Sport manual, specifcally Vivid Blue Pearl. One of the many dealers in SoCal I'd been talking to found the ONLY one in California up in Shingle Springs. So I contacted them, and this past Monday drove the 432 miles up to their dealership to buy it. Did NOT want to settle on any other color, or on the auto. Best decision I've made in a long time. The drive back home, another 432 miles, in the Fit S was a blast. Sure, it's not a 0-60 champ, but that misses the point. For a sub compact, it's astoudingly large and functional inside. Brilliantly engineered. The fit and finish is as good as any Legend, etc. Excellent build quality and parts, nothing is skimped on, despite being "entry level" - it's top shelf. Wish it had disc brakes in the back, otherwise it's awesome. Gorgeous design and aesthetics, unlike so many other "overly fussy" Japanese designs, or that God-awful and cartoonish RX8 -Japanese design at it's worst ! And the Fit is SO contrary to the jumble of jarring and clashing odd shapes and lines on the Dodge Caliber.. not to mention the ludicrous excess of so many overweight (needlessly so) Dodge and Chrysler products (and why is the new Mustang so damn overweight too?) BTW, the options on the Fit are worth it... especially the Sport muffler, adds just the right amount of attitude... PLEASE Honda, begin importing all the Mugen go-fast parts for the Fit (and the body parts too) that Mugen Japan has on their website. The Fit isn't too fast to 60, but once you get it up on the cam, into VTEC land, wooyah, it can get away from the legal speed limit with no fuss at all. While climbing the grade on I5 from the valley up to Gorman (a ka the Grapevine) a nice twisty stretch of road that's about a 6 - 8 % grade, I down shifted from 5th to 4th at about 70mph, and in no time, the tach was up to 5500, and I was doing 95 going uphill ! Got away from me a bit LOL. Equally happy yesterday driving up the PCH through Malibu and over the mountain twisties crossing from the coast to the San Fernando Valley. Awesome little car, a great ride. Lastly, check this out: while driving down the 5, just south of San Francisco on my way home from the Shingle Springs dealer, another car guy pulled up along side, matched my speed, and took a good long look. He then gave me a huge smile and a thumbs up... !!!! Remember, I'm drving a sub-compact, not a Ferrari !! That kinda sums up just how cool theFit is.
Extremely happy with this car, it just smokes every other subcompact in every possible point of comparison.

Hey jerrywimer, read the post again...the guy in the picture is 6'1...his cell phone is on his head...and there remains STILL....3" above his head...your facts are all screwed up...

but all this is moot...I am the guy that sat in the FIT being tested and drove it shortly. I'm 6'6 and my hair which sticks about an inch above my head didn't touch the ceiling. In fact, the cabin felt very much like my Element in the vertical department...very free up top..skinnier of course, but tall and comfy with nice site lines even for me.

So be a naysayer, but I'm freakishly tall at 6'6 and found the FiT exactly that.

jerrywimer says:

Argue all you want- but that 3" mentioned in the article was exactly as I said, "above his head", and *included the space the cell phone takes up*. If you want to dispute that part, the cell phone must be awfully huge compared to all others made and sold of similar design today- because it's easily twice as wide as the remaining space between it and the roof..

Besides, why get all worked up? I stated I was glad to see the new trend of making small cars roomy enough for taller folks, including this Fit. I wasn't criticizing this vehicle so much as wonder how, with only ~3" over that 6'1" person's head, the fit still was comfortable in headroom for a 6'6" person. That wasn't an attempt to denigrate the vehicle.

The head room in the new subcompact class shouldnt come as much of a suprise. The accent, fit, versa, yaris etc, are all just as tall or taller than there respective full size sedans. They aren't your fathers civic.

I recently bought my Honda Fit from the same guy that Phil got it from. Joe Davis at Carson Honda. He was a really nice guy and was straightforward about the money. The window price on the car was $18,890. I bought the car for $16,565, which is MSRP. It was a great experience buying the Honda Fit at Carson Honda and I love my little Fit. For some reason, when I drive the car or use it to haul some big boxes, I think to myself, the Fit IS go.

It's like I understand what they mean! The paddle shifters are fun to play with, but if I'm drinking something or have only one hand free, it's good to just switch to Drive. The versatility of this car is astounding. The words that best describe the Fit are: sporty, zippy, versatile, useful, smart. It livens up the daily commute enormously.
