It's been a long time since I've reached for the A/C button hoping to get just a wee bit more power by turning it off but that's exactly how I felt today as I tried to make the carpool lane before the double yellow lines kicked in. Sure I could just cross anyway like everyone else but that's just plain wrong and we all know it. I could also wind the little Fit up to redline in hopes of gaining a little extra grunt but OOOhhhh the racket. The Fit's a great city car though...

Now try driving at 4000 feet elevation with 3 adults up a long grade in the FIT. Fun Fun Fun.

And this would be the SPORT model in Europe. And they still drive faster than us Americans.

Some vehicles use A/C cutouts that sense when the engine is under load or trying to accelerate, and temporarly turn off the A/C compressor. Surprising the Fit doesn't have this.

I'd be foolish to state the highest speed I achieved in my 80hp Tercel, or even my cruising speed on the freeway back when I had it. But it did take a while to get there, especially with passengers aboard.
That's the world of cheap cars, unfortunately.

I liked the Tercel at the time. But for me it is interesting that car reviewers push the benefits of the small cars but would never buy one for themselves due to the practical and safety shortcomings.

I think one of them did buy a Fit.

I hope so. It would be nice for a critic to follow through on what they expect everyone else to do.

One of our editors did buy a Fit for his family. However, with two small children and one needing a rear facing child seat, the car just wouldn't work for me. Some people need SUVs, some need wagons, some small hatchbacks, there's no one car or even one type of car for everyone.
But really, we expect all our editors to use this car in the real world, that's why we bought one to test for a year.

I might be missing something here but why would you need to accelerate to get into the carpool lane? It seems to me that the faster you covered the distance to the double yellow lines the less time you would have to change into the lane?

"I might be missing something here but why would you need to accelerate to get into the carpool lane?"
In LA you have entrance and exit sections to the carpool lanes. You're not supposed to enter them at any point. And if you're in busy traffic, you want to get up to speed, rather than cut across in a pokey manner.

Thanks TS - I get nightsweats, blurred vision and a general queasy feeling when I picture myself SLOWING DOWN to enter the carpool lane out here in California - Yikes!
Now I know why other states have posted MINIMUM speeds.
