Honda Civic Si: Being Thankful

2006 Honda Civic Si -- Brent RomansEarlier this week, Karl blogged about his automotive "thank you" list. I would think for many Honda fans, the latest Civic Si would be pretty high on the list. It embodies the best Honda qualities -- it's quick, fuel efficient, well built, sharp handling, safe and pleasurable to own. I'd have to say that this is my favorite Honda car since the second-generation Honda CRX...

I know i comment on every si blog but i think its so right. The si is a car that puts fun first, and its so refreshing in a world where i'm still suprised the hp race is even going. Short of a few no limit roads the US isn't the place for 500hp beasts, so have a car that gives you a thrill without toping the limits everywhere you go. The si is definately that car.

I would have one by now, but my insurance quote came out to nearly
double what I'd pay for most cars.  Even an S2000 would cost me
$1,000 less per year to insure.

Is it correct to assume the Civic SI is a car for one who is completely involved with driving, as it includes rowing the shift lever constantly to keep the high reving engine power on tap?

I wonder how the SIs' appeal would change if Honda gave it a more torquey engine, like VW's turbo direct injection engine?

It would be boring just like the gti. Sorry thats quite an insulting comment to make, and i do like the gti in many ways, but i perfer the way the si lays down power. Similar to a bmw m3 or other great motors. Flat torque, and steadily rising hp. It makes you want to abuse the engine in all the right ways, and brings out the kid in you. And thats what its there for, its supposed to be a sporty car, more in character than neccisarily numbers, and behind the wheel you really feel it.

By the way the power down low isn't exactly horrid. It still has great get up and go.

Actually torque production is a strongpoint in the "new" K series engines. It just developes it in a different way than most. Instead of offering stump pulling torque down low and falling off as the revs rise it gives you adequate torque in the lower ranges and from there it just keep building and stays relatively flat throughout the rest of the rev range. The GTi is a very nice car but it doesnt beg you to drive it hard. It all boils down to personal preference.

Spargo, I agree with you totally comparing the Si with the BMW M3 as it gives the same type of driving experience even though we all know the M3 is several notches above the Si in outright performance. But for $22k I cant think of another car that gives me this much involvment and character as the Si. On that note I should be getting a Si sedan in a few months.

I am thankful for my Si, and I also agree that for the money there is no car that is more fun to drive. I put my dad behind the wheel of my Si this past weekend and he was astonished as to how fun, quick, and nimble the car is. The point is, this is coming from a guy who's daily driver is an Audi RS4. Even the Si can gain the approval of you 400+ hp fiends out there...
