Daily updates on our fleet of cars and trucks

2005 Ford GT: Not Quite a Prius, but not Bad...

Having just updated the fuel log on the Ford GT I must say I'm impressed. It's not going to earn any carpool lane stickers, but over the course of it's first 6,000 miles the car is averaging almost exactly 16 mpg (16.02, to be exact). So far it's single best tank is 19.3 mpg and it's worst is 13.6 mpg (but it felt really good through turn five on that one...).

That number inspired me to check some other long-term fuel logs for comparison...

Our Jeep Commander's lifetime average (before it's untimely demise...)  -- 13.76. Kia Sedona -- 16.48. Toyota FJ Cruiser -- 17.50. Mercedes-Benz R500 -- 16.09. We've only put a few tanks in the SRX so far, but it's around 15.7. One could argue those cars all have more utility than the GT, but one could also argue the GT offers a bit more driving pleasure. With EPA estimates of 13/21, and no efforts whatsoever to try and maximize fuel economy, I'll take 16 mpg without even grumbling.

Wow. That IS pretty impressive, especially in the context you set against the other LT vehicles.

How did it compare to other cramped 2 seaters like the Insight, the Miata and Smart? :)

Own a Ford GT AND get good mileage? I despise you even more now...

That makes my worst tank in my '02 Miata (21mpg) look terrible!

Just out of curiousity, what's the MPG of the Challenger?

It's hard to say because the speedo wasn't working for awhile (cable fell out of the back, just got it fixed). Also, the fuel gauge is wacky -- it never reads full, even if gas is spilling out of the filler door, and when the gauge nears empty it still has several gallons left -- I think. I'll try to measure it going forward now that I'm getting consistent odometer action, though I think the speedo is also a bit "optimistic" too, and I'm not sure how that's affecting the odometer readings.

I wish the original buyer would have checked the "trip computer" option back in 1970. Would make everthing much easier.

Yeah, that's good milage compared to some other exotic sports cars. Maybe Ford should put that engine in the Escape and Mariner. : ) Now that would be a Bold Move.
