Mazda Miata: Ten times the fun, twice the mileage

Okay, this is going to be an apples to watermelons comparison, so here goes.   Over the weekend, as a friend and I made our temporary escape from L.A. I was (once again) struck by the startlingly large percentage of full-size pickup trucks and SUVs that had just one or two people in them.  Granted, I'm sure some of these people have families, but by and large, these big rigs seemed to be occupied by young singletons.   I know these image-conscious folks (who always get the heavier, thirstier 4WD versions of these trucks just in case they decide to someday go trail bashing or in case L.A...

gets a freak snow/ice storm) are just doing their part to usurp a finite resource and clog up the Los Angeles freeways with their super-sized status symbols.  Perhaps me (in the Miata, at a stop light) getting hit by some kid a few weeks back (with no insurance, to boot) and more recently nearly getting taken out by one of these fools (via the classic, spastic, no-signal lane change maneuver) may have prompted this bit of justified soap-boxing.

But back to the Miata.   As I enjoyed Mazda's little go kart while sailing through the sweeping curves of the PCH, I felt bad for these misguided souls.  After all, instead of getting 12 mpg and dealing with such an unwieldy mass of metal, they could have actually been enjoying themselves behind the wheel of this entertaining amusement-park-ride-on-wheels we call the MX-5 Miata. Even with me using the upper reaches of the tach and taking some rather spirited runs through the Malibu canyons, the Miata pulled down 27 mpg over the weekend.
