Lackluster fuel economy is a common complaint about our long-term 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid. For the life of the vehicle, we've averaged just 23.1 mpg. Getting above 30 mpg from a tank is possible, but sub-20 mpg tanks are a more frequent occurrence on our fuel log spreadsheet.
The Accord is due for its next service and we'll be taking it to the dealership later this week...

On a whim, you should try having someone drive it like a little old man in a Buick for one entire tank of gas. Keep to the speed limits, A/C off, step on the gas like there's an egg under your foot and you don't want to break it. We all know by now the Accord is capable of bad mileage, how about driving at least one tank to see how good it can get.
What hybrids are good at is using the minimum amount of fuel under light load. Driving it hard can actually get worse mileage then a non-hybrid. It takes energy to recharge those batteries and if you are a late braker, the regenerative braking doesn't have time to help much. The batteries are then recharged using power from the motor (thus burning more gas )

23mpg? Wow. I guess Toyota really has Honda beat on the Hybrid technology. I'm doing better in my 330i...

sounds like Honda went for performance rather than fuel economy with this one. Does the Hybrid perform that much better than a stock V6 Accord to justify the extra bucks, or does the Hybrid's extra weight negate the handling feel?

Our Accord is pretty fast in a straight line. And if you read my post from a few weeks ago, you'll see some commentary about its handling abilities. But is the Hybrid worth the extra cash? Based on the car's lackluster sales figures, it would seem that most people think "no."

I've had my 2005 HAH for 10 months and have gotten 27-31 MPG on every tank in mixed driving. I keep complete records. The mileage is increasing. At first I was getting about 27 MPG and now it's 29-30 every tank. I filled it today and the last tank's MPG was 31. I don't think I could even get it as low as 25 MPG if I tried.
