Pontiac Solstice: Big Paws

Ever see a German Shepherd puppy? I'm sure other breeds exhibit this trait, but these young 'uns have huge paws for such little animals. Kinda like the Solstice's big tires and wheels. These babies are big -- 245/45/18...

This is a relatively small two-seat roadster that weighs about 2,900 pounds (yeah, still pudgy compared to the 2,500-pound Miata) and it wears tires as wide as those on my '89 Trans Am GTA, a 3,500-pound, 5.7-liter V8-powered muscle/pony car.

Apart from looking cool and really filling out those wheel wells (I remember Bob Lutz being adamant about the big rubber making it to the production Solstice) they provide a lot of stick. Yes, its probably more footprint than the Solstice needs, but they make for fun when carving up the canyons on a Sunday afternoon...
