Civic Si: The Case of the Glowing Wrench

With the instrumented signal flare ablaze beside the tachometer, we knew it wouldn't be long before we crossed paths with the local Honda dealer. It was time for our Civic's 10k mile service.

As Dan mentioned in a prior blog, it was time to get this car to the dealer for regular maintenance. We called Honda of Santa Monica on Tuesday to make an appointment for the next day. By noon on Wednesday the car was back in our possession and the fiery orange wrench on the dash extinguished.

Along with the departure of the maintenance light was $141.10 from our wallet. The invoice explained that this was for: oil and filter change, 27-point inspection, tire rotation and pressure check, battery and charging system check, lube of the locks and hinges, suspension bolt tightening, fluid top-off and brake inspection. Labor charges made up $117 of the fees, parts $22.40 and $1.70 to Uncle Sam.

Our experience with the Santa Monica dealership was once again prompt and pleasant. I don't see any reason why we won't be back there again next time the glowing wrench comes calling.

Hey, that's good stuff to know! Thus far, Honda of SM's been good to me. That wrench is really irritating, though. (:

$141.10 is a lot of money for an oil change in my book. Is this the regular cost every 10k? or is this just a sort of first service thing?

Also how often do you guys change your oil? I'm always nervous about that with the whole old 3000 mile rule of thumb, now they say between 5k and 10k for the si, but i'm never sure what to do.

Spargo - read your owner's manual, as it talks about how to service the Si with its maintenance minder system - there isn't a rule of thumb, as the car keeps track of your driving habits, ambient temps, engine loads, revs, etc. to determine the service intervals.

Just follow the maintenance minder system!

Evanmmc no doubt I'll be following to a T, this is the most expensive thing I'll ever have owned, and its a gorgous machine, and I'm a gearhead, this will, lets just say, make my fiance very jealous. My question is more about the cost however, filling up oil has always cost me at most $30, so why did it cost you folks so much? was it just an after factory check of all the bits and pieces?
